15 Hour Anatomy Course

Any version of the book Functional Anatomy of Yoga will work for this course.

In this course, we'll build on the fundamental anatomical concepts covered in the 20 or 30 hour anatomy course. We'll use that foundation to follow the anatomy through the process of building asanas. We'll deconstruct seemingly complex asanas and look at their parts and pieces through the lens of anatomy. My intention with this course is to provide you with information and tools to understand why you might be observing a particular pattern in your student's practice. At the completion of this course, it's my hope that you'll then have a better understanding of how to help your students build the patterns they need to evolve their postures.
Module 1 Anatomy of Forward Bending and Variations
In this lesson you will learn the anatomy of forward bending. You will begin to apply your knowledge of functional anatomy to understanding what prevents and allows depth of movement in forward bending. This lesson will explore how the anatomy of forward bending changes depending on the particular type of forward bending pose.

Module 2 Common Patterns in Forward Bending
This lesson will explore some of the common patterns that show up when there is some kind of restriction that prevents moving fully into a forward bend. In this lesson, you will learn where in the functional anatomy these restrictions likely arise from as well as how to work with them. We'll explore techniques to help students open those tissues and evolve their pose.

Module 3 Anatomy of External Hip Rotation
In this lesson you will begin to explore poses that rely on external rotation at the hip joint. You will learn how differences in the anatomy of standing versus sitting impact the available range of motion externally at the hip joint. Additionally, the lesson will discuss differences in observed range of motion when both hips are externally rotated compared to working through one side at a time.

Module 4 External Hip Rotation in Lotus and Leg-Behind-Head
In this lesson you will learn about common patterns in two categories of poses: half-lotus/lotus and leg-behind- head poses. Common patterns of tension that restrict range of motion in these poses will be described as well as suggestions for working through these tensions to evolve the poses in the long term.

Module 5 Anatomy of Twisting
In this lesson you learn about the basic anatomical components that allow for twisting in the body. This lesson will explore how both pelvic movement and spinal movement contribute to depth of movement in twisting poses. A method of helping students evolve the revolved side angle pose is then discussed.

Module 6 Variations on Seated Twists
In this lesson we’ll further explore the movement of twisting in the body. This lesson will explore how binding impacts the depth and stability of seated twisting postures. Additionally, this lesson will cover methods of assisting students whose body proportions make twisting postures challenging.

Module 7 Anatomy of Arm Balancing
In this lesson you will learn the foundational patterns for developing steady arm balances. Specifically, we’ll explore working with bakasana and titthibasana. In this lesson we'll also cover how we can use the general arm balancing pattern to evolve jump back and jump through.

Module 8 Taking Arm Balancing Upside Down
In this lesson you will learn about some additional steps for building a solid arm balancing pattern once we take arm balancing upside down. In addition to learning about the techniques of moving in and out of handstand, this lesson will provide some methods for developing strength in the tissues needed to support the body when you begin to apply the handstanding technique.

Module 9 Anatomy of Backbending and Setting the Patterns in Upward Facing Dog
In this lesson you will learn how to set the foundation for working deeply in backbends over the long-term. This lesson will explore how the body works in prone backbending positions where the limbs are not used to assist the range of motion. Additionally, this lesson will help you examine common patterns in upward dog that often influence other backbending postures. Common patterns of restriction and tension will be explained and then you will learn some potential methods for working intelligently with these patterns to set a good foundation for developing additional backbending poses. In this lesson we will also apply the basic principles of backbending to urdhva dhanurasana (wheel pose). You will learn about the anatomical patterns that allow movement into urdhva dhanurasana as well as common restrictions for this movement. This lesson will explore ways to work with these common restrictions in a way that allows students to evolve urdhva dhanurasana into a deeper pose over the long-term.
